Lotronex
A drug typically prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome, Lotronex
was pulled from the market on November 2, 2000, after reports of
several deaths, removal of a patient's colon and bowel surgery.
The Los Angeles Times recently reported on how Food and Drug Administration
policies led to approval of the drug.
Some Lotronex users have
been hospitalized and many complain of ischemic colitis and other
serious complications related to the colon. Several lawsuits have
been filed against the manufacturer, Glaxo Wellcome. The US News
and World Report recently suggested that the manufacturer "sought
to market the drug broadly and downplayed the likelihood that Lotronex
could cause dangerous constipation."
